You may have seen us mention the game Gunslingers & Zombies a lot lately. We have had a few news posts about the game prior to its launch and we recently featured it in our Indie Horror Game Showcase. So, it was only a matter of time before the review came about, and now it is that time. We were provided the game by Ultimate Games and took a look at this turn-based zombie hunter on the Nintendo Switch, but first learn about the game from the developers below.
About The Game
Gunslingers & Zombies is an action-packed and adventurous strategy game that comically combines two themes beloved by pop culture: the Wild West and the Undead. Become one of the gunslingers fighting zombies. Plan your combat tactics and put them into practice in turn-based battles. Explore the crazy world of the Wild West, shown with a pinch of salt, where nothing is normal. Take on the weirdest types of zombies you’ve seen so far, such as the mighty Buffalo Zombie! Give zombies a taste of your pistols, shotguns, rifles or knives. Let them regret the day they… yyy… the day they became undead!
Zombies are one of the few characters in gaming that can show up in just about any genre of game. You have straight up horror games with zombies, Call of Duty with zombies, and now we have the wild west with some zombie action as well. Now how they got there is a mystery, but it’s your job as the cowboy to destroy the evil zombie forces and rescue citizens as you go in this turn-based adventure game. That’s about it for the story line…don’t need much more then that I guess.
Gunslingers and Zombies is a turn based game similar to Mario + Rabbids. Your cowboys have a certain amount of “action points” which determines the amount of moves or attacks you have per turn. Your goal is to move from the start of the level to the end and defeat the zombies and rescue citizens before the zombies take you out. Your cowboy has different weapons to use depending on range of the zombies and can heal your other cowboy friends as you make your way through the level. Watch out for the zombies as they make their moves to get within attack range as well. Once you are out of action points you have to give the zombies a chance to move, and they move quick. Gameplay overall is pretty decent but felt a little clunky at times.
Gunslingers and Zombies does a great job with its level design as far as keeping the wild west theme going. The downfall in that is the colors all tend to bleed together and you get lost in a dust storm of browns and tans. The highlighting of the characters when it is your time to move or showing which character is selected doesn’t feel right either. There are some little cinematic moments in the game that look decent for the graphical concept the game is shooting for, but overall, nothing too spectacular with the game graphics wise.
Howlongtobeat.com didn’t have any play time data on Gunslingers & Zombies, but from the amount of time we put into the game I can say the levels are pretty decent timewise and you wouldn’t have a problem sitting down and playing through a few of them in each gaming session. The only thing I think might deter you from getting to far into the game is the turn-based aspect of the game is a little slower paced then I would have liked.
Overall, Gunslingers & Zombies provides an interesting take on the turn-based game genre. While the gameplay had some nice features, such as weapons selection and saving citizens as you make your way around, but it was a little too slow paced and less interactive than I would have liked. Graphically, the game looked decent, but the colors bled together leaving you lost in a wild west dust ball. Now a days zombies show up everywhere so storyline wise…why not have cowboys vs zombies there probably is a move about it somewhere. Playtime wise the levels were short enough to play through a few of them before losing interest, but the gameplay was a little slow to keep you hooked for much more. This game is right on the line of recommending or passing on, so the choice is yours. We will say it is a bit cheaper on Steam if you want to check it out, but not break the bank, plus Steam has a decent refund policy.
Gunslingers & Zombies
Gunslingers & Zombies brings a unique take on the turn-based game genre, offering decent graphics, and short levels for playtime. It did fall short in the gameplay aspect with slower turn-based moves and a lack of sounds. A toss up for the pass or recommend. Out now on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
